In Summer 2024, the Race Roots & Resistance Collective (R3) in partnership with the Directorate of Social Responsibility is offering three summer research positions as part of the Emerging Scholars Programme to students currently enrolled in History or related joint honours undergraduate and postgraduate taught degrees at the University of Manchester.
This year, R3 is embarking on a collaboration with the Royal Exchange Theatre (RET) as members of their staff team undertake historical research to better understand, document and address the history of the building they occupy which previously served as the site of the Manchester Royal Exchange. They are specifically interested in exploring the links between this institution and its ties to global systems of slavery and colonialism. Emerging Scholars will work in partnership with RET staff to conduct independent research under the supervision of R3 historians with the aim of feeding into artistic and heritage interventions.
You can learn more about The Emerging Scholars Programme on our website here. The Programme has a dual mission to advance critical research on race as well as address well-documented structural inequalities in the discipline of History in the UK.
