Call for Applications: The Emerging Scholars Programme 2025

Updated: Dec 3

In Summer 2025, the Race, Roots & Resistance Collective (R3) in partnership with the Directorate of Social Responsibility is offering four summer research positions as part of the Emerging Scholars Programme to students currently enrolled in History or related joint honours undergraduate and postgraduate taught degrees at the University of Manchester. Please note: We are also now accepting applications from current MA student in the Institute for Cultural Practices with a BA degree in History.

This year, R3 is continuing its collaboration with the Royal Exchange Theatre (RET) as members of their staff team undertake historical research to better understand, document and address the history of the building they occupy which previously served as the site of the Manchester Royal Exchange. They are specifically interested in exploring links between this institution and its ties to global systems of slavery and colonialism. Emerging Scholars will work in partnership with RET staff to conduct independent research under the supervision of R3 historians with the aim of feeding into artistic and heritage interventions.

You can learn more The Emerging Scholars Programme on our website. The Programme has a dual mission to advance critical research on race(ism) as well as address well-documented structural inequalities in the discipline of History in the UK.

The Call for Applications and Application Form are available below and the deadline for applications is 13 January 2025.

All applications should be sent to Dr Kerry Pimblott (kerry.pimblott@manchester.ac.uk).
